Cullisse Highland Rapeseed Oil to launch in over 100 stores across Sweden

Easter Ross based former lawyer Robert Mackenzie continues his expansion into new export markets with new deals in Sweden which could potentially net the producer a six figure boost to his annual turnover.

Working closely with Stockholm based distributor, North Parade AB, Mackenzie has secured listings for his CULLISSE brand in over 130 stores across the Scandinavian country, with the second shipment of product in just one month being delivered last week.

In a country with a population well acquainted with using home-grown cold pressed rapeseed oil in its cooking, it is no insignificant achievement to have launched - in such a big way – a product from across the North Sea to rival the Swedish alternative to olive oil. Christina Gotzl, Founder of North Parade explains how it happened: “I was visiting the Speciality & Fine Food Fair at Olympia in London last September and chanced upon this wonderful Scottish product. At first I was captivated by the strikingly stylish CULLISSE branding and beautiful packaging, but then I tasted it and it was unlike any other rapeseed oil I had tried before. I was immediately convinced it had potential to do very well in Sweden.”

Gotzl tested the Swedish market at a trade show in the country’s capital city, Stockholm, in early January. She was amazed by the response: “Chefs, retailers and even competitor producers of Swedish rapeseed oil were blown away by the distinctive flavour.”

Describing his oil as “giving taste notes of a silky butteriness and summer grassiness with hints of asparagus, pea shoots and freshly picked garden peas” Mackenzie attributes the accolades it has received – including a gold star in the 2014 Great Taste Awards – to the effect of the unique micro-climate and fertile soils of Easter Ross; the good crop husbandry of his father and brother; the variety of seeds selected; and the process of gently cold pressing the seeds, bursting with all the naturally healthy properties nurtured in the seed pods during the extra long days of light that he says distinguish the Highland Summer.

With turnover up 50% in 2014 Mackenzie has set his sights on more than doubling his turnover in 2015 with the Swedish deal going some way to helping him achieve that target. Adding to the Highland business’s list of export markets, which now includes Denmark, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates, domestic sales also continue to grow, with an emphasis on speciality retailers such as London’s Selfridges, Scotland’s Valvona & Crolla and restaurants including Heston Blumenthal’s Fat Duck and The Galvin Brothers’ La Chappelle.
