With new season Scottish herring now appearing in fishmongers and supermarkets, the Scottish Pelagic Sustainability Group is recommending that people make this delicious fish one of their ‘two a week’.

UK health experts recommend that people should try to eat two portions of fish per week, one of which should be an oily fish such as herring or mackerel. 

And to get this message across, Seafish, the UK authority on Seafood, has launched its ‘2 a week’ campaign encouraging people across the country to eat two portions of fish per week.

Eating two portions of fish per week brings many benefits to your health, as fish is packed with vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that keep our bodies in good working order. Increased consumption of fish helps heart health, lowers risk of diabetes and Alzheimer’s, maintains brain function, bringing positive changes to an individual’s well-being.

Ian Gatt, chairman of the Scottish Pelagic Sustainability Group, said: “Scottish herring is such a nutritious and tasty fish, which also holds the Marine Stewardship Council ecolabel confirming the sustainability of the fishery.

“The summer herring season is now getting underway and herring makes the perfect purchase for consumers looking for a delicious and healthy-to-eat treat.”

Ian McFadden of the Scottish Pelagic Processors Association says: “Herring, or kippers if smoked, is very easy to cook and can be served in a variety of ways. It is great value for money, has excellent nutritional value and can be grilled or baked whole. It is also ideal for the summer barbecue.”
